Rizal as Teacher
Since boyhood Rizal knew the value of good education. He himself planned to established a modern college in Hong Kong for Filipino boys so that he could train them in modern pedagogical concepts, which were then unknown in the Philippines.
In 1893 he established a school which existed until the end of his exile in July, 19896. It began with three pupils and in the course of time the enrollment increased to 16 and later to 21.

Rizal's mother suffered so much from Spanish brutality and injustice. The year before 1890 she was arrested on the flimsy charge that she was not using her surname "Realonda" and, despite her advanced age and blindness, she was forced by a cruel Spanish officer of the Guardia Civil to walk from Calamba to Santa Cruz. Fortunately, the Spanish governor of Laguna, who happened to be a gallant cavalier, pitied her and kindly set her free.

Infidelity of Leonor Rivera
Rizal received a letter from Leonor, announcing her coming marriage to an Englishman, which is the choice of her mother, and asking for forgiveness to Rizal. This letter was a great blow to him. He was stunned, his eyes dimmed with tears, and his heart broke.

Rizal was in faraway in Madrid, Suzanne could not forget him. She wrote him a letter. Suzanne is the only woman that cries a lot when Rizal left. In her letter she says that "Where are you now? Do you think me once in a while? I am reminded of our tender conversation ... I do not despair and I limit myself to murmuring against time which runs so fast when it carries us toward a separation ... Goodbye! You know with one word you can make me very happy. Aren't you going to write me?"

Rizal and Paris Exposition of 1889
Like any other Filipino tourist in a foreign land, Rizal was fascinated by the Universal Exposition of Paris which opened on May 6, 1889. The greatest attraction of this exposition was the Eiffel Tower which was built by Alexander Eiffel.
