     Rizal was in faraway in Madrid, Suzanne could not forget him. She wrote him a letter. Suzanne is the only woman that cries a lot when Rizal left. In her letter she says that "Where are you now? Do you think me once in a while? I am reminded of our tender conversation ... I do not despair and I limit myself to murmuring against time which runs so fast when it carries us toward a separation ... Goodbye! You know with one word you can make me very happy. Aren't you going to write me?"

Rizal and Paris Exposition of 1889

     

     Like any other Filipino tourist in a foreign land, Rizal was fascinated by the Universal Exposition of Paris which opened on May 6, 1889. The greatest attraction of this exposition was the Eiffel Tower which was built by Alexander Eiffel.

Exile in Dapitan

Upon his return to the Philippines in 1892, he was arrested by the Spanish government for being a subversive and for his reported involvement in the rebellion. He was then exiled to the island of the Dapitan in the southernmost island group of the Philippines, Mindanao. There he established a school that taught English to young boys, he worked on agricultural projects on abaca, a plant used for rope, and he continued to practice medicine, eventually meeting one of the most famous women in his life, Josephine Bracken.

 The Execution of a Hero

The death of Jose Rizal came right after a kangaroo trial convicted him on all three charges of rebellion, sedition and conspiracy. He was guided to his cell in Fort Santiago where he spent his last 24 hours right after the conviction. At 6:00 AM of December 29, 1896, Captain Rafael Dominguez read Jose Rizal’s death sentence and declared that he will be shot at 7:00 AM of the next day in Bagumbayan.

Chapter 17 - Misfortunes in Madrid

In the autumn of 1890, Rizal attended a play with his friends at Teatro Apolo. He lost his gold watch chain with a locket containing the picture of Leonor Rivera, his beloved sweetheart.  The lost of the locket proved to be a bad omen. In december 1890, Rizal received a letter from Leonor, announcing her coming marriage to an Englishman and asking his forgiveness. He was stunned, his eyes dimmed with tears, and his heart broke.

The Night Before Rizal's Execution

Rizal spent his last 24 hours in his death cell where he received members of his family and writes his letter of farewell, the first one to his "second brother" Ferdinand Blumentritt. He gave his sister Trinidad an old petroleum lamp and whispered to her in English that there is something inside the lamp. Thus Rizal's famous farewell poem, "Mi Ultimo Adios", was found.
